Rev. Herbert C. Mueller, Jr., First Vice-President of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod was born May 16, 1953, the son of Rev. Herbert C. Mueller, Sr., and Ruth (nee' Polley) Mueller, in Grand Forks, ND, and reborn into the Kingdom of God by Holy Baptism at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Niagara, ND, on May 31, 1953.  He was educated in Christian Day Schools in Hankinson, ND, and Bay City, MI, and attended high school in Bay City.


Pastor Mueller attended schools in the Missouri Synod system of colleges in order to prepare for the Holy Ministry, receiving an AA degree from Concordia College, Ann Arbor, MI (1973); a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, IN (1975); the Master of Divinity degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO (1979); and the Doctor of Divinity degree (honoris causa) from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN (2012).


On June 21, 1975, he was united in marriage with the former Faith Anderson at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bay City, MI.  The Lord has blessed their marriage with three children, Bert (37, pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Westgate, IA and Grace Lutheran Church, Fayette, IA, married to Kristen – three children, Naomi Joy, 9, Micah Herbert, 7, and Rachel Marie, 1 – Nathan (34, an veteran of the US Army, served in Iraq and Afghanistan, now a mechanic in Corning, IA) and Carol (28, teaching piano in LaPorte, IN, married to Michael Scheck).  Presently Herb and Faith make their home in Waterloo, IL.  Faith, a retired pre-school teacher, is busy working for her family and for her church, as well as painting portraits. 


Rev. Mueller has served the Lord as pastor of three parishes in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod:  Pastor, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Chicago (1979-1983); Associate Pastor, Zion Lutheran Church, Bethalto, IL (1983-1990); and Pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo, IL (1990-1994).  He served nearly six terms as Southern Illinois District President (1994-2010).  He has also served in the Southern Illinois District as treasurer of the pastoral conference, District Secretary, and District Second and First Vice President.  Presently Rev. Mueller is serving as the First Vice President of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, having been elected to that office in July 2010, and reelected in 2013.


Then District President Herbert Mueller was appointed by Synodical President Al Barry to the Synod’s Commission on Ministerial Growth and Support in September 1998, serving through the Synod Convention of 2007.  From 2004-2007 he served as Chairman of that commission. In April 2003, he was also elected to the Program Committee of the Council of Presidents of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.  In 2004 he began serving on the Concordia Pulpit Resources Advisory Committee.  As First Vice-President he also serves as Chairman of the Synod’s Colloquy Committees.
